Soul Food — really, a love letter to African American cooks — creates a representative soul food meal, with a separate chapter on each part of the meal. With chapters on fried chicken, greens, black-eyed peas, and more, the structure creates an informative and entertaining way to discuss the history, answer key questions, and include three recipe variations (traditional, health-conscious, and contemporary) for each dish.
